Located in the cradle of American beekeeping, the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild works to encourage and promote urban beekeeping through fellowship and education, and to raise awareness of the importance of bees to our environment.
My daughter and I were watching the neighborhood bees clean the frames that I had just extracted honey from in our backyard in what really resembled a feeding frenzy. It reminded me of what you see when a hive is getting robbed out and I told her that Italian bees were notorious for this behavior. She was inspired to make this drawing for me…

Noted Pennsylvania beekeeper David Hackenberg will speak at the Circle of Hope movie event on Saturday evening during the Honeyfest. Mr. Hackenberg was the first US beekeeper to recognize and raise the alarm about Colony Collapse Disorder in the winter of 2006.
For more information on the event see this post.
Here’s an article about CCD that proposes that there actually is no such thing. Before you get upset, read it. Even Dennis VanEngelsdorp has pointed out that similar mass die-offs have happened in the past. The basic point of this article is that while globally there’s plenty of bees, industrial agriculture and economics may eventually lead to a real collapse.

One of the great institutions in Philadelphia is the Academy of Natural Sciences. It is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the country and has internationally renowned collections of plants, animals and insects. In fact, The Entomology Dept of the Academy of Natural Sciences has one of the oldest and largest research insect collections in the world.
One thing they DON’T have, but many of us do, is hive beetles. To quote Don Azuma of the Wagner Institute:
The hive beetle, Aethina tumida, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is a relatively recent introduced pest to the U.S. The Academy does not

The Great Sunflower Project is looking for native pollinators. If you like bees, you should like native pollinators too.
The project encourages everyone to plant sunflowers, watch for bees and report on their findings.
Check it out.
This is the presentation that Dave Harrod gave at the last Guild meeting to introduce new beekeepers to the parts of a bee-hive and to outline what will be available in the Group Woodenware order.
See this page for more information on the order.

The Montgomery County Beekeepers Association is once again organizing a hive irradiation program which is open to Philadelphia beekeepers as well. They are gathering people together to sterilize woodenware from hives that may have died due to disease — foulbrood, etc. — that could linger and kill off replacement bees. I picked up some used hive woodenware and plan to do this as a preventative measure. This is a technique that has been used by various clubs around the country for 10-20 years.
They are planning to do irradiation again in the third or fourth week of March. Irradiating one pallet
