Noted Pennsylvania beekeeper David Hackenberg will speak at the Circle of Hope movie event on Saturday evening during the Honeyfest. Mr. Hackenberg was the first US beekeeper to recognize and raise the alarm about Colony Collapse Disorder in the winter of 2006. For more information on the event see this post. Mr. Hackenberg operates one of the larger honey and pollination companies in Pennsylvania and was the first to report Colony Collapse Disorder in 2007. Follow this with a look at how local artists are using bees as inspiration in the Da Vinci Art Alliance’s annual exhibition at Bartram’s Garden. Sponsored by Da Vinci Art Alliance through a grant from Campbell’s Soup Company and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Part of the Honeyfest, this free workshop will help you discover the fascinating history of early beekeeping in America. Dr. William Butler, long-time beekeeper and history buff, will talk about beekeeping before Lorenzo Langstroth developed his famous beehive, and share a patent of an early Langstroth hive that he owns. Mead and honey-based beer tasting at Cliveden of the National Trust. The Wagner Free Institute of Science will feature “Pollinator Power!” events for children ages 6-12 about the importance of pollinators in our lives. Sip honey-sweetened iced tea, and listen to local folk rocker, Liam Gallagher, while you peruse goods from local booksellers, bee artists and beekeepers. Beeswax candle-making, scavenger hunts, and the debut of the Institute’s new native pollinator garden will sweeten the day for all who attend. Visit Wyck for house tours, honey tastings, open hive talks, honey extractions, a demonstration on making cosmetics from beeswax, and a talk about bee-friendly gardening. Visitors will even be able to take an up close look at the inner workings of a beehive through a Teaching Hive donated by Brushy Mountain Bee Farm – a chance to see detailed pictures of capped and uncapped honey, pollen, comb, and more, with no worries of being stung!
